A Military Graveside Service will be held in honor of James D. Gates on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at Hill Crest Memorial Park, 601 Hwy 80 E. in Haughton, LA. Visitation will be held Friday, August 27, 2010 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Jim was born on June 19, 1935 in Bunkie, LA and lost his battle with cancer on August 25, 2010.

Mr. Gates served our country in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, ending his career as a Master Sergeant in 1973, after serving in the Vietnam War and receiving numerous medals and awards. After retiring from the military, he worked locally as a mechanic, retiring from Red River Chevrolet. Jim delighted in cooking barbecue, fish, and crawfish while spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing and sharing crossword puzzles with B.S.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Betty Sue Gates, parents Albert and Delia Gates, step-daughter, Vicki Hebert, twin brother John Gates and sister, Clara Gates.

He is survived by his step-daughter Karen Bissell and husband Randall, two grandchildren, Taylor and Brandi Bissell, sister-in-law, Ida Gates, nephew John and niece Jeanette Gates, as well as a host of very special friends.

"G-Paw" was loved by many and will be missed by all.

The family would like to extend special gratitude to the Willis Knighton staff and requests that donations be made in his honor to St. Jude Research Center.
